Content Marketing for Startups: Everything You Need to Know

May 22, 2021 | Content Marketing 101

Are you a new business owner in the process of launching and growing your business? Being a startup company is no easy task. As I’m sure you know, it takes a lot of time, energy, and effort to attract your target audience. Plus, it requires a lot of money, especially when it comes to marketing your brand and standing out amongst your competitors. But what if I told you there is a way to organically grow your new business? Sure, it still takes time, energy, effort, and maybe even money, but the results are worth it. Discover everything you need to know about content marketing for startups, including how to create content that actually works.

Do Startups Need Content Marketing?

Yes, they do. It’s as simple as that. The reason? Because all businesses, new, old, and just getting started need content marketing. Effective content marketing strategies do so much for a company. And while it is important to have a well-rounded marketing plan, content marketing is not where you want to lack.

When to Start Content Marketing as a New Business

The best time to start content marketing for startups is as soon as possible. In fact, if you can write and produce content on your website, through email, and on social media platforms before your business officially launches, you are ahead of the game and off to a great start.

Content on your website includes your landing pages, product pages, and your blog page. Of all your website pages, your blog is the most valuable in terms of website traffic. Because blogs incorporate SEO keywords (search engine optimization) to drive traffic to your website via search engines, the sooner you get content on your blog, the better. While it sure would be nice, your blog post isn’t going to jump to the first page of Google as soon as you hit “Publish.” It takes time for your content to gain traction. So, the sooner the content is published the better.

Email marketing content is also extremely important and is a great way to get people excited about your brand even before it officially launches. To do this, you should be collecting email addresses using a strong lead generation piece from the get-go. Contrary to what some might think, email marketing is still one of the most effective content marketing strategies out there

Lastly, people are less likely to follow your social media accounts if they only have a couple of posts published. So, before you launch your business, focus on building up your social media pages. This way, when someone finds you, they have a lot of interesting content to view and read, which will make them more likely to engage with your brand.

How Do Startups Actually Get Their Content Marketing to Work?

I’m not going to lie to you… creating quality content takes time. The last thing you want is to spend time developing really great content only for it to do nothing for you. Fortunately, there are a few ways you can ensure your content works.

Where to Start when it Comes to Content Marketing for Startups

As I mentioned, for content marketing for startups to work, you need to get started right away. Because it takes time for your target audience to find and engage with your content, the sooner you get started the sooner your results will come. Here are the three things you need to start content marketing for startups.

You Need a Content Marketing Budget

First things first, you need a content marketing budget. Content marketing is “free” in the sense that once a blog post is published on your website, you don’t have to pay to keep it there or pay every time someone finds your website via the post. However, getting started with content marketing may take some additional funds.

As a startup, your budget is sacred. That’s why it is important to prioritize your spending. Choose the platforms that are most important to you and focus on creating quality content rather than a large quantity of content. You don’t have to be on every major social media platform right away. And you don’t need to be sending out email campaigns three times a week or publishing blog content every day. Determine what’s manageable for you and go from there. You can always add more later as your business grows.

You Need a Content Marketing Plan

Once you know which content marketing platforms you will invest in first, it’s time to plan exactly how you will start. Consistency is key when it comes to content marketing, and having a solid content marketing plan in place will ensure your efforts pay off.

Determine how often you’re going to publish content on each of your main platforms, such as Instagram, Facebook, and your website for starters. Then, plan ahead. If you can, plan at least a month’s worth of content in advance every month. This way, even when you’re busy, your content is ready to go.

You Need a Content Marketer to Execute Your Plan

Content marketing for startups is most effective when you have a content marketer on your team. Consider your budget and see if there is room to add a writer to help you create content. This will make the entire process that much easier. Plus, with someone writing and managing all of your content for you, you can focus on wearing the many other hats I’m sure you do as a new business owner.
