What is Cross Promotion and How to Use It

Mar 22, 2022 | Business Tips, Content Marketing 101

If you’re anything like me, you’re looking for ways to save time and money as a business owner without compromising your marketing efforts. That’s where cross promotion comes into play. Cross promoting content helps you save time while simultaneously driving traffic to your website and accomplishing your business goals. Read on to find the answer to your question, “What is cross promotion?”

What is Cross Promotion, and Why is it Important?

What is cross promotion? In content marketing, it’s the process of promoting your content across multiple platforms to strengthen your digital marketing efforts and increase brand awareness and engagement at no extra cost. When you use cross promotion alongside content marketing strategies, you organically grow your brand for less money than paid advertising. Once you create relevant content, cross promote it across various platforms to make your one-time work go further and do more for your company.

How Does Cross Promotion Work?

Cross promotion works by promoting content, products, or services across multiple platforms. Sometimes, cross promotion includes partnering with a non-competitive brand to promote your business, and in return, you promote theirs. However, using cross promotion strategies within your own channels effectively accomplishes your desired goal, whether that’s website traffic, leads, or sales.

Cross Promotion Plan to Implement Today

Whether you want to partner with another small business or use cross promotion within your own channels, you can implement simple strategies today. Use the following cross promotion plan as an example of how to save time by promoting a single piece of content across various channels to increase brand awareness and engagement without spending extra money or time.

1. Write and Publish a Blog Post on Your Website

If your goal is to increase your website traffic–which leads to more sales–start your cross promotion plan by writing an SEO-optimized blog post relevant to your target audience. The blog post should answer your audience’s questions and strategically plug your products and services. Once you have a blog post you’re proud of, you can cross promote it to reach more people and drive more site traffic.

2. Send an Email Newsletter Highlighting the Post

First things first, send an e-newsletter to your email list that highlights the new blog post. While you can include other information in the email as well, make the blog post the focus of your email and include a CTA (call to action) button to “Read More.” This button should link directly to the blog post on your website.

3. Create an Instagram Graphic and Caption Teasing the Post Content

Now on to Instagram. While you can’t directly link your blog post in an Instagram post caption, there are a few ways to cross promote the blog on IG that still drives website traffic. Start by updating the link in your bio with a link to your blog post. Then, create a graphic and write a caption that includes “teaser” content from the blog. Get your audience interested in learning more and direct them to the link in your bio to read the entire piece. Lastly, post an Instagram Story and directly link to the blog post using the “Link” sticker.

4. Directly Link Your Blog to a LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook Post

While you can’t include a direct link in an Instagram caption, you can link the blog to a post on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Write a simple post teasing the blog content, and include the link for your audience to visit your website to read more.

5. Record a YouTube Video and Share the Blog Content

Lastly, if you utilize YouTube in your business, you can create a video about the blog post, even using some of the content to write your video script. But don’t give away all the goodies in your video. Instead, link the content in your YouTube video description to encourage your audience to visit your website and read your latest blog post.

What is Cross Promotion? Now You Know

Cross promotion is a simple concept–it means promoting your content across multiple channels, with or without the help of another brand. While it saves time, it still requires initial content creation, like writing a blog post, an engaging, informative product description, or a landing page that makes someone want to invest in your service.
