Repurposing Content: The Ultimate Time Saver for Small Businesses

Apr 5, 2022 | Content Creation Tips

As a small business owner, I know the struggle of not having enough time, especially when marketing my business. Of course, I know the importance of it because it’s what I do for my clients. But after I’ve spent my days writing blog posts for various businesses, creating email marketing campaigns, and optimizing multiple landing pages, I find myself without the time or energy to market myself effectively. Can you relate? If so, I do have good news for you. There are ways to save time and make marketing easier. One of those is repurposing content. I do it for my business, my clients’ businesses, and now I want to share the benefits of content repurposing with you. Marketing your small business using repurposing strategies will make your life so much easier. Now, I know you don’t have much time, so let’s get started.

What is Repurposing Content?

Ok, let’s start with what it means to repurpose content. Also known as content recycling, it is the process of reusing all or parts of existing content to create additional content pieces. Essentially, you take the time and energy to create one valuable piece of content, like a blog post. Then, you use your blog post content to create other marketing pieces, such as an Instagram post, infographic, or video.

For a real-life example, I wrote this blog post and then turned it into this Instagram post, only adjusting the content slightly to fit the IG graphic. Rather than writing entirely new content for Instagram, I simply took sentences from my blog post and put them on a graphic to create a helpful carousel post for my followers.

What is the Benefit of Repurposing Content?

The most significant benefit of content repurposing for small businesses is the amount of time saved. You can create a week’s worth of content from a single blog post (which I tell you how to do here in a minute).

The other benefit is that it expands your reach and enables you to engage more people. While blog posts are essential for small business growth, not everyone learns best from reading blogs. Some people are visual learners and enjoy infographics or designed posts, while others are auditory learners and want to watch a video or listen to a podcast to learn. When you repurpose content, you share the same valuable information but present it in different ways to reach your audience in the best way for them.

Repurposing Content Ideas for Small Businesses

Blog posts are the easiest content type to repurpose because they are packed with valuable information that you can easily break into various content pieces. Here are practical ways to repurpose new or existing blogs to expand your reach, engage your audience, and save yourself a lot of time.

7 Ways to Repurpose a Blog Post

  • Break one blog post into multiple blog posts. For example, if you have a listicle blog post (i.e., “Top 20 Instagram Tools for Growth”), you can break that post into multiple pieces by expanding on each main point. Whereas a listicle post may touch briefly on numerous things, a repurposed blog would cover one topic in great detail.
  • Use the main points of your blog post to create multiple social media posts. Say your blog has four main topics or points. You can make each main point its own social media post or Instagram Reel.
  • Take multiple blog posts and turn them into an e-book. Do you have multiple blog posts that touch on a similar topic? Consider combining them into one resource to make it easy for your audience to find the information they’re looking for. For example, if you want to learn how to write a blog post that works to convert, you can check my e-book HERE
  • Send your blog post in an email. Email marketing is so valuable for small businesses, but you might struggle with knowing what to send your audience. A simple, quick, and easy solution is to send your blog posts to your subscribers. The benefits are three-fold: 1) You don’t have to write new content; 2) You keep your subscribers engaged; 3) You drive traffic to your website! To make your email more robust, include your top-performing social media posts or any business updates you might have.
  • Pull a catchy line or quote from your blog post for Twitter. Do you share an interesting fact, stat, or quote in your blog? Share it on Twitter, and be sure to link your entire blog post for people who want to learn more.
  • Directly link to your blog post on Facebook and LinkedIn. Unlike Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn allow you to write a new post and directly link your blog. Write a short caption with a strong CTA (call to action), and link your post to drive traffic to your website.
  • Create a YouTube video, IGTV video, or podcast using your blog post as a script. By organizing your blog into an easy-to-read video script, you can simply say what you wrote to appeal to auditory learners. Post the video on all your platforms, and include it in your email.
